Information about PABT and INSBT for defence

The important matter is that this blog is for those who are searching for information on defence entry scheme. I appeared for PABT at NDA (National Defense Academy) so if procedure out in civil is different then I may not be the right story teller.

IAF has also made some alterations in its exam pattern over the years. In case there is some significant information, please share it. But, hopefully it can't differ from it to a great extent.

In NDA first of all there is an INSBT test(Instrumentation and Battery Test) in which there is proper explanation of various types of the flight instruments as mentioned:

Altimeter

3-Pointer Altimeter.svg
The altimeter shows the aircraft's altitude above sea-level by measuring the difference between the pressure in a stack of aneroid capsules inside the altimeter and the atmospheric pressure obtained through the static system. It is adjustable for local barometric pressure which must be set correctly to obtain accurate altitude readings. As the aircraft ascends, the capsules expand and the static pressure drops, causing the altimeter to indicate a higher altitude. The opposite effect occurs when descending.

Attitude indicator

Attitude indicator level flight.svg
The attitude indicator (also known as an artificial horizon) shows the aircraft's relation to the horizon. From this the pilot can tell whether the wings are level and if the aircraft nose is pointing above or below the horizon. This is a primary instrument for instrument flight and is also useful in conditions of poor visibility. Pilots are trained to use other instruments in combination should this instrument or its power fail.

Magnetic compass

Aero Magnetic Compass.jpg
The compass shows the aircraft's heading relative to magnetic north. While reliable in steady level flight it can give confusing indications when turning, climbing, descending, or accelerating due to the inclination of the Earth's magnetic field. For this reason, the heading indicator is also used for aircraft operation. For purposes of navigation it may be necessary to correct the direction indicated (which points to a magnetic pole) in order to obtain direction of true north or south (which points to the Earth's axis of rotation).

To name as a list they are :

These links are from Wikipedia Flight Instruments and anyone preparing for INSBT must and must read it. Most of the people clear PABT, its just that INSBT written exam that holds many back.

Each is explained properly and there is full liberty to ask questions before test commences. Be very very careful while they explain the details, a small misconception would send the candidate a failure. After that there is objective test on the basis of explanation. In my case there were 30 questions in 20 min. I was nervous so did 3 questions in first 10 minutes but with little confidence and did 18-19 more in next 10 minutes. I mean to say it's easy, in fact just very simple.

Those who clear INSBT are eligible for PABT and those who fail it are not elligible for being pilot in air force but only for civil airlines. There is no PABT for those who failed INSBT, though they can take test in civil.

Remember PABT is once in life time test, either you make it or forget it.

In PABT test a person is first explained/demonstrated by instructor practically and then the person is made to do it all, though there is no prolonged practice session, but just around a minute or so. It's all like video games.

First, there is a square and boll on monitor. The purpose is to keep the boll in the square with the help of pedals and joystick as, the boll will start to move in random direction on its own and would require constant monitoring. The more time you can keep it in the square, the more you score. There are two lights on top corners on monitor screen, when you see them you have to move joystick in specific direction and when there is beep sound you have to press a button on joystick, these are bonus points.(you will be informed by instructor on how to move joystick and which button to press....you need not search it )

Next, the candidate is provided with a small boll on screen hardly of the dimension of diameter 5mm. There will be flows of similar bolls across the screen from random directions and u have to overlap your boll on to them the maximum number of overlaps you can, the better you score. Here, there are no bonus points but speed of bolls approaching is significant and the change in direction is sudden. Score is for total overlap only !

Test is of short duration and very interesting but requires very high concentration and focus. I was feeling to play it all one more time but u know it's test, so had to leave quitely.

They check eyes and hands and feet coordination. I had no information about what I was to do for PABT exam but cleared it easy and please for your life I am saying if someone offers you training for all this simple things and trying rob you of your money, please.... don't take it. COZ if you can't clear this simple test you can never fly that machine, it's all aptitude that nature gives us, some have it and some don't but those don't have what those who qualified might not have. There is enough life has to give..still..there are world beyond these stars..don't give up(an Indian saying....).

As an experienced person I will recommend "f 22 lightning 3 " game which is cheap enough to buy and there are many more variants available. The best feature of this game is the dials and reading available from cockpit view. Playing this game couple of times will help you clear this concepts and understanding about spacial orientation.I am also putting sample images from cockpit view where you can see those dials.

Note: This note is to get idea about INSBT not PABT.Pay attention on various readings when plane is flying or on ground or tilting..its the only reason we need these meters. Using these pilot flies during night as swiftly as during day !

"You're on the road to success when you realize that failure is only a detour.".....

Just give it a best try and rest leave it to ur genes.

A community is also there on facebook

so you can meet people there as well..!

and Don't forget to say a lil thanks...:P

The following two pages will give you a touch of the kind of questions asked in INSBT exam ....must read !!
Instrumentation-Directions

Instrumentation-B
Though often I have referred that they don't ask anything about aeroplanes but during speech phase I was given a topic on "LCA". If I wouldn't have been aware of it, I am sure I would have said nothing, but I knew and I spoke on it with ease.

The latest figter jet from India in progress is being developed by the collaboration of Indian and Russia and called "Sukhoi PAK FA". And don't worry, no diplomatic or political question is asked but just for information, Russia is the most trustworthy ally India has ever had since independence.

Tips for SSB board(specific to Indian Air Force)

1. Don't try to act smart or out smart anyone, remember its a team event and army is a team.

2. Listen to instructions very well , be it anything.
3. Always reach  places on time, delays are not really entertained.
4. Be honest about your weakness, remember they see thousands like you every year, they will know it right at the moment you lie.
5. During the interview be very clear about what you speak and don't worry about lackness of knowledge on various subjects they might ask questions on. Having cleared NDA/CDS, you have already demonstrated your knowledge, now its time for confidence and truth.
6. Till the final results are out, everyone will be very well behaved but soon those who will lose might show their true colors. To me it was the most strange aspect of this whole process, be prepared for it.
7. If you fail and exhaust all your chances, try something better..........!!

its gr8 2 read ur blog, it helped a lot to prepare me mentally for my ssb which r on 22nd oct.
if u donot mind, wuld u plz gimme some info regarding, - Speedometer,
- Altimeter,
- Climb & decent indicator,
- Turn of bank indicator
- Magnetic compass
- Artificial horizon

Unknown said...

see these r the meters to find various dimensions while flying. These are not the right technical terma but close to that .
Altimeter checks the flying height. Speedometer for speed like in bike and car. Tunk and banking instruments tell u the degree u have inclined on any particular direction. MAgnestic compass keeps u pointing to north.

They make u imagine a horizon and it is what i was refering about artificial horizon.
THese tests r simple don't worry. Everyone clears who pays attention.

u will get objective questions with 4 options for each questions..
there will be around 30 questions to be done in 20 minutes...
no pictures ae involved, its totally iamgination based...
u would have question like
->if u can see bottom and left wing of plane as major part in which direction it is moving like left, right, upwards or downwards etc...

its not difficult we all have seen planes...

it was rlly nice to read ur blog.
i have my ssb dated 21 april 2010 at varanasi for flying branch.can u plz let me knw wat type of questions are asked in PABT test!
can u give me some examples so that i will have some idea.
thank you.

Unknown said...

there is no such definite questions but they will ask you about the position or direction of plane if the reading of meters is given or if u r able to see bottom right of a plane. So combined aspects of tilt meter and part of plane you are watching,u can judge that plane is going in which direction....
similar question....

yar right now i m in a trauma because i secured 59.72% in my b.tech(c.s).i was not supposed to be an engineer some social pressure get me in this .ever i wanted to be a pilot .i cleared AFCAT written test but can't go for SSB at varanasi on 21nov2011.two times i m screaned out from allahbad and bhopal for army and navy in tech and cds entry .what you would like to suggest me cz its my childhood cherished dream.i have enough knowledge about fighters and force stuff but then even ......please help

Unknown said...

@pranay: see there is no scope for your knowledge about fighter planes of force...they don't expect anyone to know about it and they don't ask anything on it even if you say u know....
the second thing is ..simply work hard as engineer and earn good money than u can earn yourself private pilot license (PPL) . Outside defense this is the only way to touch sky...!!!...live to complete your dream and its not impossible..its not space shuttle...!!

Unknown said...

@pranay: feel trauma only if ever you lose your health....till you are healthy U are the king of ur life and its your job to take care of it....never use word 'trauma' unless u have life threatening disease....this is how I look at life...if it helps you..!!
Good luck buddy..!

for the first time i read something useful about PABT. can you tell me a book that gives questions on INSBT.

priyanka said...

hey pankaj thanks for your help. i have attended the air force ssb. i got short listed on the 1st day and was there for all the five days but unfortunately i m not recomended. and i would like to add some useful points which i came to know after attending this ssb.
1) EKT is no more conducted. This test is cancelled from the selection process.
2) They (airforce ssb) are going to add one more test in the screening process. This could make screening process some what difficult than usual. They took the respective test for us as the first batch but its results where not considered for us and would be considered from the next batch.

Unknown said...

@priyanka: sorry to know about not getting recommended but it's fine. Sometimes something better is in store. And thanks for such a nice feedback and updates....there are very few people who come back and write about their experience..!!

priyanka said...

yes pankaj i think so but atleast i will try again once.. if not recommended then may be i will consider myself not capable of getting into defence system..

Unknown said...

@Nivi: I think he is overage. The data I found is

19-24 Years Indian Military Academy
19-22 Years Naval Academy
19-23 Years Air Force Academy
19-25 Years Officers’ Training Academy

I would suggest he shall stick to his police job.

Unknown said...

sir, i have a strong desire to join indian air force, and just because of this desire,i diverted my mind from engg. And left it when i was in 4th sem. Just now i,am in final year degree course (geog.,history, and polity). You are repuested to please guide me in an appropiate way as you are doing above in this blog. About books that i should read, once i visited 'adampur' air force station and there i extract some knowledge about P.A.B.T they told me that its all the game of luck, and concentration, they advised me to play video game. If so then which game i have to play. . .

Unknown said...

i have clearly referred to the name of the game "f22 lightening" which is a novalogic product. It kind of helps a bit only on INSBT test and it's still no surety that u will qualify it. There is no game to play for PABT, as such simple games are not designed ..as it is just a boll and a box to keep it in !

kshitij said...

I WANT TO GIVE PABT SO WHAT SHOULD I DO ??

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE AND EVERY THING OTHER ELSE ??

PLEASE KINDLY INFORM ME ABOUT ITS DATES PLACE ETC. .

Unknown said...

sir,is there any chance that a person who has failed his INSBT test in NDA
can apply for PABT test in CDSE...??

Unknown said...

@NAKUL: No INSBT means specific for defence, if not cleared than not eligible for any defence entry, though you still stand eligible for private license.

shailesh gautam said...

hi i am also from the city sonipat and wants to contact you about complete information for career in iaf as a pilot..i currently study in class 12th and is going to give my nda exam on 11 august2013.plzz provide your contact information if possiible..

Unknown said...

@shailesh gautam : hi, my suggestion to you will be that first you prepare well for NDA exam and if you are successful in clearing it than only you shall worry about PABT. There is nothing in PABT more than I have specified on this page but still if u have some query I will be glad to answer that. For now give your best to NDA exam. Do things in phases, don't worry about things that will follow up later.

Unknown said...

hiiiii i passed the pabt first round which is objective type but i failed in gaming round ,so is i am eligible for taking pabt again or not.

Unknown said...

@Ankur: No you cannot, not even in public aviation. If you had failed first objective exam, you could try for civil aviation, but now its not possible.

neha said...

hello sir i need to talk to you and need your email id. Pardon me for asking for your mail id but its urgent and needs to be talked through mail. please reply asap

Rishi said...

It is all bullshit iaf has started conducting a test "cognitive" I have myself gave this they didn't explain a single thing ...& when the exam is done. They started giving information about how to give exam ..that's why iaf has moron pilots

Unknown said...

@Rishi: You are the only person to report that and apparently you failed so you are frustrated. IAF has very good pilots, its bad to make such comments.

Unknown said...

I wear specs. I applied for nda and gave 1st preference to IAF. I cleared NDA and now going for interview. My doubt is if i pass the interview would i be admitted to army or completely rejected.

Unknown said...

Please reply before 5th August.

Unknown said...

Please reply before 5th August.

@Chirag: You are still eligible for Army and navy. Go you must go for NDA. Good Luck !
